Weighted GPA Calculator
Calculate your weighted and unweighted GPA. Honors classes add 0.5 points and AP, IB or dual enrollment classes add 1.0.
What is a weighted GPA?
A weighted GPA gives extra credit for harder classes. In an unweighted system an A is always 4.0. In a weighted system an A in an AP class can count as 5.0, because the course is more demanding. Weighted GPAs usually run on a 5.0 scale, so a 4.5 is possible.
How the weighting works here
- Regular: no extra points (A = 4.0)
- Honors: +0.5 (A = 4.5)
- AP, IB or dual enrollment: +1.0 (A = 5.0)
Extra points are only added when you pass the class. An F stays at 0.0 no matter the course level.
Example
Take an AP class with an A (5.0), an honors class with a B (3.5) and a regular class with an A (4.0). All three are 1 credit. Your weighted GPA is (5.0 + 3.5 + 4.0) ÷ 3 = 4.17. Your unweighted GPA for the same grades is (4.0 + 3.0 + 4.0) ÷ 3 = 3.67.
Check your school's rules
Every high school sets its own weighting rules. Some add 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, others add 0.25 or only weight AP classes. Colleges often recalculate your GPA using their own method, so it is worth asking your counselor how your school reports it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA treats every class the same on a 4.0 scale. A weighted GPA adds bonus points for honors, AP, IB or dual enrollment classes, so it can be higher than 4.0.
Can a weighted GPA be higher than 4.0?
Yes. With AP classes counting as 5.0, a student with straight As in AP classes can reach a 5.0 weighted GPA.
Do colleges use weighted or unweighted GPA?
It varies. Many colleges look at both, and some recalculate GPA using only academic core classes. Your school profile also explains how your GPA is weighted.
How many points does an AP class add?
The most common system adds 1.0 for AP and IB classes and 0.5 for honors. Some schools use different values, so check your school handbook.
